Is it common for teens to have backaches?

Question:
My 17 year old daughter has been getting lower backaches for the past year. It's usually when we have been standing a lot like shopping or going to an amusement park and standing in line.

Doctor says nothing is wrong with her back. She's tired of dealing with it. She has not carried a backpack for the past 2 years so we know that is not the cause.

Do other teens have this?

Answers:
heck yes its normal.
im turning 17 on tuesday and i get them all the time!!
my doctor says it totaly normal and that im going through a 'teen' faze. expecially since i have a job, and school, im always on my feet so when i finally sit down or lay down, my back kills me. its totaly normal. but if its really bad, you should see a doctor because it could be scoliosis.
sounds like its all in her head.
Im 13 and my upper back hurts all the time like when i lean down or stand for a long amount of time..i can't stand it either.
I'm a teen. and the only reason why i get lower back aches is after i do Yoga. tell your daughter to stretch more and she'll be fine.
No i don't.
I'm 14 and since I was 8 i've had lower back problems. It does run in my family though so that probably has something to do with it. Take her to a different a doctor and get another opinion.
usually backaches are from sleeping in funny positions. You don't even know it because you are sleeping but you might move around and accidentally move the wrong way and cause a pain for the morning. Sleep with a pillow between your legs that helped me.
sometimes people who work on cement floors alleviate that pain with a cushioned inner sole in their shoe. also, could it be pms related?... exercises (back and stomach) can help also - good luck (have a daughter the same age)
I had a friend whose son was having them..Took him to a specialist and he was developing scoliosis at age 13. By the time he was 16 they were doing surgery and putting a metal rod down his spine. Do not discount what your daughter is telling you. Pain is our friend! Keep digging until you find out what your friend is trying to tell you!
Yes its normal. people of all ages get backaches doing what your daughter does. have you thought of seeing a chiropractor? i see one once a week and it really helps. back pain can start with the feet. just an idea for your daughter!
She could have a pinched nerve the Dr. is not picking up. It might be a good idea for a second opinion. There is always a reason for pain. My sister suffered with lower back pain for years with no treatment. People were saying it was all in her head, that she was a hypochondriac, or, she was only trying to get special attention. All because the Dr. said he could not find anything wrong with her. Finally our mom took her to another Dr., he diagnosed her correctly and took care of her problem.
Yes teens do. . .I did as a teen and no one found anything wrong. . .now I have degenerative disc disease and had to have spine surgery. Has her back been x-rayed or an MRI. Does she have scoliosis? Maybe she just needs back exercises and strengthen her back by swimming etc. I wished I had done more exercising as my back was weak as a very young girl. There are many more options than when I was a teen so seek help through a rheumatholgists or spine Dr. and do not ignore her. She could have simply pulled a muscle or could have juvenile arthritis. How I wished someone would have helped me when I was her age. Keep trying. . .have her keep a journal when it hurts. Is it before a rain? Is it before her periods only? Is it only when standing? Is it when sitting? This could help with a diagnosis. Ask around for a good spine or other Dr. sometimes it takes a while to find a good Dr. who is willing to listen and take you serious.
My sister had that when she was 18-19. She had serious back pain, and it lasted for months. Now she still has back pains, but not as serious (she's 20). I don't think it's uncommon. The doctor told her that it was impossible for someone her age to be having back pains, and it was nothing. But he was completely wrong. I don't know why they think it's physically impossible for a teen to have a pain in their back. I suggest you go back, or maybe someone better and demand to know what you can do. I know for a fact I'd be mad if the doctor acted like it wasn't a big deal, because I got a sore back once for just a day and it was like hell.
In the meantime, maybe try a full back massage...a friend of my sister with similar problems said it helped for a little bit. If it's not too expensive, give it a try.
What kind of shoes is she wearing?

Very often the type of shoes that you wear can hurt your back. I know that when I wear cowboy boots or low heels because I'll get pains in my lower back a lot because I'm either not used to walking on those types of shoes, or I'm not walking right.

Along with that, another thing that affects it is the type of floor you walk on and the type of shoes you wear while walking on it. For example, for walking in an amusement park , wear shoes with a lot of support and that aren't totally flat, like running shoes. The harder the floor, the more the impact of you walking is going to hurt your back; hard floors include, tile, stone, granite and certain wood floors. When you do walk on those, you have to wear really good shoes with a lot of support on the heel of your foot, because the impact reverberates up to your back and can bring lots of pain.

Good luck,
