Breastfeeding and taking the pill - when?

Question:
I have been given the pill to take, but since I haven't started my periods yet, when do I start taking them (as opposed to taking them on the first day of your period). Cheers

Answers:
Breastfeeding doesn't prevent getting pregnant. I got pregnant with my 2nd child while breastfeeding, and I got my period back when my 1st and 2nd baby where 4 months old, now I have a 4 months old and no signs. I use other contraceptive method until I have my period back and then I'll start the pill, no before that.
You may ovulate before your first period so unless you want to gamble with getting pregnant again you may want to start it now!

Breast feeding will not prevent it although it may delay ovulation you have no idea of predicting when you will start again.
check with your doctor or health visitor or family planning to be on the safe side. I would think you take them when ever you want.
If you are breastfeeding, that's a natural contraceptive - you won't have your period for at least 6 months or sometimes, even until you stop breastfeeding. That's if your baby depends on breastmilk alone for nourishment.

For some who breastfeed for a year, they don't start having their period until they stop breastfeeding. Plus, it also ups the metabolism, so they lose the pregnancy fat much faster.

However, if breastfeeding is supplemented with formula milk, sometimes the period returns earlier. If you get back on the pill, it won't be advisable to go on breastfeeding, because the pill is usually hormonal that may have some effects on your baby.
if you are on a POP you can start them 3 months after birth if you are only partially breastfeeding, that is giving the baby formula milk as well as breast milk.

if you are fully breast feeding - no other foods or liquids given to the baby - you cant start taking it for 6 months after the birth.

dont know what the deal is for combined pills but you could look online possible on netdoctor.com ot wikipedia. i think it's possible to start combined pills straight away but its worth checking out.

hope this helps, star if you like!
Each of these natural birth control methods has ways of making sure that a pregnancy does not happen. For instance in the Lactational Amenorrhea method, the length of time that a woman breastfeeds a baby is perceived as being a time of infertility.

As a breast feeding is a way delaying pregnancy as well as providing the new born with immunization and protection from other forms of diseases it is natural to think about breastfeeding a child for as long as possible.

Besides these forms of natural birth control you can find other types. These will include the Basal body temperature method. In this method the body temperature is measured to see if ovulation has occurred. While these are just a few of the ways that natural birth control can be achieved you can also use herbs and occasionally the copper IDU.

I was advised not to go back on the pill until after I finished breast feeding - you don't ovulate when BF so no issues there.
You should take a pregnancy test before starting birth control. You can still become pregnant even if you are breastfeeding. Also you should not take estrogen based pills if you are breastfeeding.
I became pregnant with my third when my second was barely 5 months old. I was exclusively breastfeeding at the time and still got pregnant.
Hey, usually breast feeding will stop you ovulating (so you won't have a period) and normally you would be completely protected from this.

That means you can pretty much start taking the pill when you want (pick a day!) as long as your GP/midwife/etc meant for you to take them while breast feeding (I think some types of pill can interfere with your breast feeding hormones) - check the info sheet.

The pill itself usually takes has a 7 day lag - i.e. if you take one tomorrow then it won't fully protect you for 7 days, so in the interests of being super careful I would abstain or use condoms for 7 days after starting the pill - between breastfeeding, the pill and a condom you should be safe!

Good luck.
You will need to use backup protection for 2 weeks. Be sure to take the pill within the same time frame each day.Since you are still breastfeeding, this may delay getting a normal period. I hope this helps.
I think it´s terrible that they gave you the pill and didn't tell you when to take it. Very inconsiderate.

Some say breastfeeding is a natural contraceptive but I preferred not to risk it and asked my doctor to help me out. He prescribed a what some call a "mini pill" which has a very reduced amount of hormones and MUST be taken at the same time every day. You can take them right away, WITHOUT WAITING FOR YOUR PERIOD since it will not come while you breastfeed anyway.

These pills are very handy at the end of breastfeeding, when the milk is drying up and your baby might stop anytime, leaving you unprotected until your period comes.

You HAVE to check if the pills your doc gave you are in fact "mini pills" though. If they aren't, you can't take them until your first period, after you have stopped breastfeeding.
start now . you were tested before you were prescribed the pill. it still takes a while before you are completely safe. use condoms for a month after starting the pill.
