Hello I have an IUD for a year, and like you I was also young (18 y/o) and childless when I had it inserted. For me it is the best birth control ever. Besides longer periods, I have no side effects , not even cramping. It does not have hormones and it last for 10 years so its all great.

The insertion, would be quite painful but it really varies from woman to woman. Mine was a little bit painful but it only lasted for a couple of seconds to a minute so, that ok.

I would suggest that you take 800 mg of Ibruoprofen 30 min to 1 hour before insertion because this will tottally help you with the pain.

If you are getting a copper IUD, you can have sex immediately after insertion if you want to.

You won't be able to feel the IUD during intercourse and it can't puncture your uterus while you are doing a lot of chores. The only way that an IUD can pucnture your uterus is during insertion, which is very rare. It happens 0.3 out of 1000 insertions.

One you need to be towards the end of a period or shortly after when the cervix is open. Fitting an IUD is uncomfortable. Once the IUD has been inserted there are crampy pains like period pains and bleeding for a few hours afterwards. An IUD sucks. It causes heavier, longer, more painful periods after the first few months after insertion. Watch for infection. There is a small risk of an infection of the pelvic. The main risk is within the first 20 days after insertion, so a check for infection of the vagina or cervix may be advised before an IUD is inserted. The risk of a pelvic infection from a sexually-transmitted infection is also greater in women with a IUD, so women who are at greater risk for getting a sexually-transmitted infection (for example, having more than one sexual partner) may wish to avoid IUDs. The chance of becoming pregnant is very small if you use an IUD. However, if you do become pregnant, there is a higher than normal chance that the pregnancy will be in the fallopian tubes. See a doctor urgently if you miss a period and develop lower abdominal pain. The IUD may come out without you noticing.
And, (rarely) the process of fitting of an IUD can cause damage to the uterus.
MY personal experience with an IUD was horrible. The insertion pain nearly made me pass out, and for the next 5 months I had only FIVE days that I did NOT bleed. Sex was utterly unbearable. Finally I had pain and such heavy bleeding that I went to the ER. The doctors did an emergency ultrasound and found the IUD had completely punctured my uterus below my right fallopian tube. Off to emergency surgery I went. I now have scar tissue so dense that my fallopian tube is completely blocked. AND I had already had a baby, so it wasn't because I was nulliparous that this happened.

The doctors explained that not everyone's uterus is the same size or shape; about 20% of all women using an IUD will have complications ranging from prolonged bleeding to what I had or worse. I cannot in any good conscience recommend the use of an IUD, especially if you've never had a baby.

I urge you to PLEASE consider alternative methods, such as the NuvaRing.

But to answer your questions specifically:

- Everyone's insertion pain and bleeding will be different. Some describe it as mild period-like cramps, others such as myself find the whole thing debilitating.
- You CAN use a tampon. However, be aware that there is a higher risk of uterine infection (called Pelvic Inflammatory Disease - which CAN be fatal) with IUDs, especially in the first 2 months; tampon usage moderately increases this risk.
- Your BF shouldn't need to drive you; at worst you'll sit in the reception area for a little while before being released to go home. Take some Motrin with you so you can take it right before getting it inserted.
- Your partner should NOT be able to feel the IUD itself, though many men say they get poked in the head of their penis by the IUD strings (which are stiff like fishing line).
- Physical activity has nothing to do with possible perforation or dislodgement.
- Cramps can last off and on for up to 6 months. This holds true as well for intermittent and irregular bleeding.
- You can have sex again as soon as you feel able to do so.
Have you had a consultation with the Dr? You can not have an IUD inserted until you have the consultation. You also have to be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia. All the questions you have should be answered by your Dr.

I have the Mirena IUD and love it but I would not recommend it to a 17 yr old who has never had a child. You have a higher chance of expelling it because your uterus is smaller then a woman who has had a child. It is painful and your BF will need to drive you home. He shouldn't be about to feel it during intercourse. You can use a tampon. I was able to have intercourse that night.
