ATTENTION!! I am about to get the IUD mirena in two weeks will it hurt?

I have had the Mirena for 3 weeks, I am 25 and have not had any children. Insertion was the most painful event I have ever experienced. I don't want to freak you out but I feel like it is better to be prepared. I have a smaller than average uterus and cervix. The first IUD they tried placing didn't go in right and they had to take it out and place a new one in. I had to get 2 ultrasounds and 2 vaginal ultrasounds as well.
Call you doctor and ask them to prescribe you Motrin 800 to take before you appointment. Also, there are some things they can do to make you feel more comfortable. They can place a catheter up into your uterus and fill it with a numbing solution. They can place these 2 tablets inside your cervix to help soften and dilate it. I was also given an injection into my uterus and sprayed with a numbing solution.
Before placing the IUD they will measure your uterus. For me this was very painful and they had to do it three times before they brought in an ultrasound machine to verify my measurements. Placing the IUD hurt very very bad and after the second one was placed I blacked out from the pain.
That afternoon I was not able to go back to work. I was in extreme pain - my uterus was contracting - and I was finally given percocet to relieve the pain because none of the other pain medication was working. The next day I ended up having to take the day off work as well because I spent the day throwing up (most likely from the pain medication).
The first 4 days I experienced cramping, headache, naseau, vomitting, spotting and dizziness. Since then those symtoms have gone away but I now have acne and breast tenderness.
Even with the awful pain I am happy with my decision. And please remember that everyone's experience is different. My friend who has children got it placed and she did not feel any pain and has not had any cramping or spotting. Good luck. I hope you have a better experience than me!
I would take some motrin like 30 min- 1hr before getting it inserted...it does cause some cramping while it's being inserted and the best time to get it inserted is during the period since the cervix is open a little. I have the mirena and I didn't think it was too terrible of cramping when I got it. You should be able to work the same day :)
Hey ya,
Ive had the mirena for 4 years now, and I was unconcious when it was inserted, but my friend had an IUD put in yesterday and she has had a child, and she said that it was quite painful, and she had cramping afterwards. She said it was bearable once she took a few painkillers.
I had to have it repositioned a while ago, and it honestly hurts, I dont want to scare you, but it does hurt, so be prepared for it not to be comfortable. But try to relax, as tensing up makes it much worse.
Do something nice afterwards like had a coffee or a nice piece of cake, and relax for the rest of the day. Just set some time aside for yourself anyway, so just in case you do suffer from side effects, your not having to race off back to work.
Good luck! I hope it isnt a bad experience for you! ;-)
I think it depends on the person. Some ladies don't have any problems, but for me it was a very unpleasant experience. The only good thing for me was the pain was short lived. I was feeling much better within a few hours.
I am also considering getting an IUD. I have had one child already and in sept. my second will be born. I have heard that it hurts alot but nothing that your normal tylonal or advil wont take care of. I also have heard that it does not hurt at all. So I am wondering if after you get yours if you could fill me in? Please I would really like to know.
I would compare the pain during insertion to very bad cramping, not severe but pretty bad. I have not had any children so I too was expecting a little more pain. It varies for each woman.
I went to work the same day I had it inserted. There was no pain once the insertion was over. I was a little light headed for a few hours, but since I sit at a desk it did not bother me. Over the next few days I had very light cramping and since then have not had any pain or cramping occasionally.
Don't get yourself all worked up about this, you will be okay during the procedure. Take a few Advil or Motrin before you have it done. Like I tell everyone, the pain I'm sure is nothing compared to child birth.
Good Luck!
HI!! Good luck to you!
I had my Mirena placed last week. I had no idea what I was going to go thru, so I didn't have any scary thoughts, and I hope you don't get frightened.
What I felt to be the most painful was the sizing of the uterus. Honestly, it just feels like a really bad menstrual cramp. As always, everyone's body is different and reacts differently. To me the cramping was a bit untolerable, but then again, I hadn't had any menstrual cramps in over a year. I don't have any children but have had three miscarriages and child planning is going to be a big deal, that's why I had this placed.
Take some Tylenol of even Midol for Menstrual cramps an hour before and really, relax while your waiting. Tensing up can really stress your muscles and not help you with the pain at all. You will be able to go back to work afterwards, but really, who wants to go back to work??!!...LOL...
Take care and I wish you the best.
BTW - expect your next few periods to be VERY heavy and last a bit longer than usual. This will go away within time. I started my period 4 days after placement and I'm still on it as if though it was my first day...LOL...Oh! Watch out for the mood swings. I almost wanted to get a new house and get rid of my dogs...LMAO...mood swings can be worse than cramps... ;)
