I was scared for my first gynecologist exam also. It was uncomfortable, no doubt about it, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
There is a nurse who comes in for the exam the whole time, so you're never alone with the doctor (especially if it is a male doctor).
You have a thin blanket covering you so you're never completely exposed.
You get a breast exam, in which you lie down with one arm over your head while the doctor presses on your breast with two fingers, feeling for lumps.
Some doctors do an internal exam by using two latex covered fingers and insert them into your vagina. With the same hand they push in four directions around the wall of your vagina. They push down, with another hand, on your lower tummy asking if anything hurts.
For the pap smear they ask you to slide down the table (still covered with the blanket) and insert very shallowly a pap smear clamp and use a long Q-tip to swab the inside. They then test the substances on there for HPV (human papilloma virus).
They never even get the chance to look straight at your vagina so you don't have to worry about that. Besides, they look at the things all day so you shouldn't be self conscious.

It really isn't that bad. I posted a link that explains what to expect. There are a few websites that explain the procedure. You can also call and talk to them before you go. They walk you through everything as the procedure goes along so nothing is unexpected. If worse comes to worse they can sometimes prescribe anxiety meds to calm you down before you go. The important thing is that you go whether or not you have had sex yet.
Ok I'm amle and I know what the Exam consist of THE Gynocoligist will have you lay on a table with your feet in the stirrups and a gown that covers your top but your naked underneath !
HE will now use an instrument that is calleda specullum to spread your Cervix bone or muscle to take a PAP smear to chaeck and make sure their are no signs of Cancer cells !
THE Specullum used to be made of Cold steel and was very uncomfortable but today is made of plastic and much warmer !
DO Not Be afraid of having this PAP SMEAR done every year it can save YOUR life !
