Question:
I've had a small lump in my breast for quite some time now. I saw my doctor about it & she said it seemed to be a cyst (don't know how she'd know that just from an external exam?). She told me to keep checking it & to cut out the caffeine & if it didn't get any bigger than not to worry about it. This was a few years ago & it hasn't changed but recently I've noticed some whitish colour discharge from only that breast (the left). I'm not pregnant or breastfeeding anymore (haven't been for over a year) & this has been going on for a few months now. Also, I've been getting some pains in that breast that come & go. I'm going next week to get it checked out again. ANYONE HAD THIS EXPERIENCE & WHAT HAPPENED? I'm very healthy otherwise...I eat very well & exercise daily but I have a very strong history of cancer in my family & I'm really worried. Thanks for any tips!

It probably wouldn't hurt to go back to the doctor and have another exam. If he/she doesn't order a mammogram ask them why, and if you would feel better having one ask them if it would be possible.
As for how she knew that is was just a cyst from an external exam: tumors and cysts feel and act differently. With a cyst she would me able to maneuver it around a little bit with her fingers, and it would feel more like tissue than a hard tumor would.
With the fact that you have discharge and pain it still may only be a cyst, but with your strong family history of cancer it wouldn't hurt to have it checked out again.
If/when you go in for the check-up DO NOT leave the office until you have a diagnosis you understand and are completely satisfied with. If you want to know how he/she can tell the difference between a cyst and cancer by an external exam ask , if you want to know why you don't need a mammogram or a breast specialist ask. Never walk out of an office without 100% understanding of what they did, what they found, and what you need to do.
