What is a yeast infection...?

Question:
my friend says i should stop wearig thongs that are not 100% cotton because i might get a yeast infection, i just laughed at her but what is that?

Answers:
Cotton is better because it keeps you dry, but you don't have to completely avoid other fabrics unless you have a chronic problem.

A yeast infection is an overgrowth of an organism that normally lives in the vagina in small numbers. It is not a bacteria, it is a fungus called candida abicans and it's a member of the yeast family (like bread yeast)

Certain things can cause the vaginal environment to get out of balance and allow these organisms to grow out of control. Wearing synthetic underwear doesn't automatically create a problem, but if you have recurring yeast infections, wearing cotton is a smart idea.
as long as you wipe your butt good you won't have a problem w/ thongs. The thing with thongs is they rub right up against your anus and can transfer fecal matter from your there to your vagina. As long as you make sure to wipe your butt really good you shouldn't have a have a problem though.

Cotton underwear is good cause it lets your vagina breath, which makes a yeast infection less likely since it's dryer. Doctors also recommend sleeping without panties on at night for this same reason.

A yeast infection is an overpopulation of naturally occurring bacteria in the vagina. There is always yeast present but it's numbers are usually kept in check. Search wikipedia for more info.
