I had a baby two months ago and I just had a pap smear that came back abnormal?

Question:
I have never had an abnormal result before. What does this mean except for the possibility for cervical cancer? I am so nervous, I do not have my next appt until the 24th.

Answers:
Relax I had one once that was abnormal and had another one
and its was fine, sometimes they don't get enough cells in the first slide.
Abnormal paps simply indicate that there are abnormal cells on or inside your cervix. HPV is usually the culprit. Try not to worry, if it were something more scary, you would have been asked to come right in, or the doctor would have spoken to you over the phone. HPV is a virus, our bodies have an amazing ability to seek out and destroy those. We are constantly fighting off something. But, when your immune system is weak, say. from childbirth. it is harder for those antibodies to fight off the virus. You will probably get another pap smear the next time you go back. Alot of the time, the virus has been absorbed and destroyed, and this pap will come back negative. If it isn't. it doesn't mean you have done anything wrong, nor does it automatically mean you have cancer. Abnormal cells found are usually the precursor to cervical cancer. You can have a minor procedure to have those cells removed and biopsied. If they still come back positive you might need to have a very simple surgery to remove those cells. Then, you will go back for another pap about 4 months later, and again 4 to 6 months after that, just to be sure the cells were removed.
Don't be afraid. We see and treat so many of these abnormal paps every day, the procedures are scary, but so very important. Please try not to worrie, if you can't stop, call the office and talk to the nurse, or even the Doctor.
