It will vary, for some it is only discomfort, for others it can feel like bad cramping. It's not as bad as child birth though.
It really only takes a few moments, by the time you would reach unbearable pain (which I doubt will happen) it will be just about over with.
Take some Ibuprofen before you go and relax.

Oh my word, not to worry. There's just one tiny little cramp when he goes through the cervix and then it's over. It's not even close to getting a shot or having a tooth filled. Relax! You will love the freedom of the IUD!
