IUDS? Doesn't that hurt?

I have Mirena...and I love it. If you have not had a kid I have heard that it hurts more. The IUD is inserted into your cervix, so it does hurt a bit, but like severe cramping. The procedure took about 1/2 hour, most of that was spent waiting for the topical to kick in. The doctor did her thing in about 3 minutes and gave me some vicodin for the cramping. I was sore and crampy that night, but was fine - went hiking the next day and I am protected until 2011!
Oh, and I don't have a period.
I got an IUD a year ago. I got the 5-year one called Mirena. There were a few people in the office at the same time as me saying that it didn't hurt at all. Unfortunately, mine hurt a little when they put it in. I don't think that's normal though. My doc said that she was having a hard time getting it in. I assume you've had a baby before, so this is the best way I can describe it. You know how at the end of the pregnancy, the pelvic exams (when the doc checks to see if you're dilated) begin to hurt a little? Well, that's what it felt like to me. It only hurt while she was inserting the IUD (which by the way is TINY), but the pain went away immdiately afterwards. Also, a few people suggested that I get it inserted while I was on my period because it's less painful then. That grossed me out, so I didn't do it. Maybe I should have!
Good luck!! It's not that bad!
There is not one doctor out there who will insert one unless you have already had at least one child - don't ask me why - I don't really know for sure - but that's how it is. You aren't supposed to feel it at all but the thought of a foreign object floating around inside didn't sit well with me! What REALLY hurts is having 3 c-sections! So I found a good bc pill - there are so many offered to work for YOU horomonally, shorter periods, less cramping, etc. Now I have my 3 kids and had my tubes tied, cut & burnt on the ends and don't need ANYTHING AT ALL anymore! Didn't have a period for the first 10 months either - but doing great now! Good Luck!
I have been considering getting the IUD put in as well. I DO NOT want anymore kids right now ( have a 4.5 and 1.5yr old boys) but I do not want the hormones either.
My dr. and sis in law swears that it just feels like mentrual cramps for the first day. My Dr. also insists that it is put in on your cycle.
The way I look at it is this. if I can give birth (vaginally) to a 9.14oz baby then I can get an IUD put in. Pain is relative.
Good Luck!
IUD insertion feels like a strong but brief menstrual cramp. If you have already had a child and don't like hormonal methods IUDs are great. Your periods may get heavier and more painful though.
