What does Provera really do? (Not depo provera the birthcontrol)?

Question:
I understand the point of taking Provera...to restart your menstrual cycle. But what exactly does Provera do internally to your body? Does it "clog" up the blood for a bit, like pause it...and then once you're done taking the pills after 10 days, the "doorway" for the blood opens again? Or does it do something entirely different.

I'm trying to look up answers on google/yahoo search but there's more info on depo provera...

Answers:
Provera is basically the hormone progesterone. This hormone is normally secreted in larger quantities during pregnancy. It causes the lining of the uterus to build up, then when you go off the medication, the withdrawl from the drug makes your body shed the uterine lining. It works much the same way birth control does, only doctors use larger doses for shorter periods of time to give you your period in a matter of a week or two.
