Lump in breast found. Will the doctor automatically order tests?
Question:
I am 25 and have a family history of breast cancer - mother and great-grandmother. Also, I was not pre-menstrual when I found the lump so I know that is not the cause.
Answers:
With your family history, probably the first thing that will happen is you'll be referred out for a mammogram. Depending upon the results (which can take 10-14 days for interpretation), you may or may not then be referred to a breast health clinic for an ultrasound, needle biopsy or lumpectomy.
I found a lump 2 years ago, and while the mammogram was fairly conclusive the doctors still wanted to make sure (because I too have a family history). The ultrasound was fast easy and painless, and it just confirmed the findings of the mammogram...an inflamed milk gland. Antibiotics and heat therapy was all that was required in my case.
GOOD FOR YOU for being proactive and not being afraid to pursue personal care! I wish you the best.
only if the doc does not know what it is.
Don't worry too much for now. There are many non-cancer reasons for lumps in your breast. You're doctor will have to see you first to determine what the next steps should be.
My daughter had a lump (it was painful) when she was only 18 and we got very worried. When we went to the doctor the first thing he ordered was an ultrasound. They found it was a cyst, she got some meds, and it went away within 2 weeks without further problems.
So, don't jump to conclusions until you get some real answers, stay positive - good luck.
Most likely your doctor will order a mammogram and an ultrasound. Depends on the symptoms...are you getting ready to start your period, is it hard and immovable, or soft and freely movable, is it tender? Those questions will help determine if it's just a cyst or not. Since you have a family history, you should insist on at least a mammo or ultrasound.
Because of your family medical history (make sure your doctor knows!) you will be sent for tests immediately. If your doctor doesn't suggest them, insist on it. You need peace of mind. There's a good possibility that you do not have breast cancer, but it is always better to err on the side of caution. You'll probably be sent for a mammogram. Also, they will probably want to get a biopsy of the growth. It's good that you caught it early and that you do your monthly exams. I wish you the best.
