Has any one here got PCOS? If so do you take Metformin?

Question:
The doctor told me i can't have it until i want a baby. Is this true? She wasn't a good doc so i think she didn't know what she was on about. She didn't help me and told me theres nothing she can do and to put up with it. I have alot of pain with my PCOS, does anyone else, because the doc said you don't get pain with it. HELP!!! Does it hurt more when you eat certain food, i do. Do you think i could have something else as well? Sorry for all the questions.

Answers:
Hi, I have PCOS but am not on Metformin. I take Dianette, which has really helped clear up my skin. Metformin is prescribed if you are insulin resistant, as it is an anti-diabetic drug. My doctor told me that there are things that can be done if and when I want to become pregnant (Metformin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/metformin... is one of them as it can cause ovulation to resume, the other is Clomiphene citrate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/clomiphene_... ). You can read about some treatments and general info here: http://www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.com/pcos-t... .

As for the pain, it is possible - one of the theories is that the ovaries can be 1.5 to 3 times their normal size which causes pain through pelvic overcrowding.

The food problem, you could try changing your diet to see if that helps at all. There are PCOS diet books around that might help such as these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/pcos-diet-book-n...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/low-gi-guide-man...
There are also books which will tell you all you need to know:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_b/02... .

Here are some good webpages with general information as well:

Hope that all helps and you get everything sorted, good luck x
hey i got pcos iam 22 i been told by thr doc i can never jhave kids its painy near my ovaris my periods are inregular sometimes i dont have some for 4 monthes
Hi, I have PCOS and I get a lot of pain. My GP told me that an anti-androgen version of the pill called Dianette helps with associated symptoms eg hirsutism (excess hair) and acne. I can't take the pill myself but other than that I was told there are no other licenced treatments unless I want to fall pregnant however, I am due back to see my gynae next month so will see what she says! I am very overweight and losing weight will help but of course having PCOS makes it harder! With regards to certain foods and pain it sounds more like a stomach/irritable bowel thing though I'm not a doctor so you are best asking yours (or another one in the practice if your GP isn't helpful). All the best.
I have pcos and I haven't had metformin.
It's a diabetic drug and women who have pcos sometimes have insulin ressistance I don't have it so wasn't prescribed it.
You should only be prescribed it if your insulin ressistant
The pain is probably the cysts that are on your ovaries and as for the food situation this could be IBS
I also used to suffer with lots of pain but have managed to stop this through eating healthy and exercising and weight loss.
good luck
I have PCOS and tried Dianette which I had a freaky allergic reaction to and I have also received laser treatment due to facial hair caused by PCOS. Weight loss and exercise helps but I would go back to your GP about the pain (see another doctor in your practice). I managed to get pregnant after trying for a year but that was 5 years ago and haven't fell pregnant again, though there is fertility treatment on the NHS for women with PCOS, Good luck babe !
