A Pap smear is a test in which your doctor collects cells from your cervix for microscopic examination. It is done during a pelvic examination. During this, you lie on your back, your legs are placed in stirrups (this lithotomy position), your knees opened, and a speculum--or tool that gently holds your vagina open--is inserted. The cervical cells are collected with a swab, brush, or spatula-like tool, and spread on a microscope slide.
A pathologist or laboratory tech checks for the presence of abnormal cells--either precancerous, cancerous, or STD-related.
A negative Pap means your results are normal.
