Is it necessary for a woman to have calcium deposits surgically removed from her breast?

Question:
My step mom had a mammogram and the Dr. referred her to a surgeon. The surgeon said she has calcium deposits with "sharp points". He wants her to have them biopsied and surgically removed on Monday. This seems a little aggressive to me. Is this protocol? He said it is new, that women should have the calcium deposits removed to prevent them from becoming cancerous?

Answers:
My wife had that kind of deposit and the doctors needed to make sure there wasn't a tumor behind the deposit. So they removed the deposit and inserted a metal marker clip so that they can monitor the area for cancerous leisons.

Is it neccessary. No. Is it prudent. Yes.
i wouldnt do it unless your mom is in extreme pain and they are uncomfortable. most of the time these deposits are benign but the doc may have a reason for doing this like she has way to many and that may cause a problem down the road.
I have been told I have them, but as of yet not told they have to come out
I don't think there's much chance of it becoming cancerous, however, these things can sometimes expand and become a hindrance. I had to have one removed myself, when I was only 15. It had increased in size at a very rapid pace, and while I had others, I only had the one removed.
