Does anyone know how the birth control Mirena works?

Mirena will only cause you to miscarry if you are already pregnant. Mirena works in 3 ways: it helps block sperm from reaching and fertilizing you egg, it thins the lining of the uterus and it stops the release of eggs from the ovary.
Pain during placement varies for every woman. I had Mirena placed a few weeks ago and it was the most awful pain I have ever endured. I have never had children though and so the pain was a little worse for me than others. My friend had it placed the month before and all she felt was a slight pinch. I had severe cramping the rest of the afternoon and night and had to take prescription pain-killers. If you are worried about the pain I would talk to your doctor beforehand and ask him/her to prescribe you something a little stronger to take before and after insertion.
There are also many things they can do to make you more comfortable during insertion. I had a catheter placed into my uterus and filled with a numbing solution. I had two tabs placed on my cervix to help soften and dilate it. And I also had an injection and numbing spray.
I would discuss all your options with your doctor before you make any final decisions. After the first week of cramping, spotting, headache, vomiting and dizziness I have felt much better and I am very happy with my decision.
Good Luck!
It doesn't cause a miscarriage.most GYNs want you to be on your period to have it inserted. That is for two reasons.the cervix is at it's thinnest and it ensure's you're not pregnant. It goes into the uterus and blocks the sperm from reaching the egg.
