A question for breastfeeding moms and moms who breastfed?

Question:
Is it common for your period to be abnormally heavy the FIRST time you get it after you have a baby? I am breastfeeding still and got my period for the first time since baby was born, however, this period was unusually heavy. I was soaking up super tampons in a half hour and super pads in a couple of hours. Normally my periods are pretty light and last only 2 to 3 days, and only cramp the first day. This period has gone on for about 4 days now, and the cramps dont stop and its still really heavy. I have even began to think that I could be having a miscarraige? But my cramps are tolerable, they just never lasted past the first day. Any thoughts or ideas? Moms were your first peroid after birth unusually heavy? Any SERIOUS advice or input would be helpful, thank you all.

Answers:
I breastfed both of my boys a very long time and didn't get a period until I stopped breastfeeding. As I recall, they were normal.

If you're having such an unusally heavy flow and cramping for several days, I think there is a strong possibility you're having an early miscarriage. It is thought that perhaps up to 1/3 third of all pregnancies end within 1-3 weeks after conception, without the woman being aware of the pregnancy. Her period appears to be especially heavy but otherwise there is nothing unusual.
It could be the fact that b/f'ing causes the womb to contract ( wait till you are b/feeding you 3rd right after labour --it cramps , and your uterus feels like a hard ball !) and could be causing the period to be faster and stronger. also the 1st period, you're body is reregulating itself. if it doesn't calm down in a day or so, i would see tour OB just to be sure.
i don't know how old your babe is but the cramping could still be the uterus contracting. i had heavy flows and bad cramping after each baby. you have to remember, your body has gone through a lot of changes. your period will never really be the same as it was.
I seem to remember that being a very normal thing for the first period after having my babies especially if you are breast feeding. Imagine my surprise too! With the heavy bleeding. Like you I usually had that on the first day and they usually only lasted thee days totally. But the whole having babies thing changed that. It doesn't matter if you have them vaginally or c-section either.
