Why is it that When I Start to Menstruate it Drains me of Energy?

Question:
My doctor wanted to put me on birth control because of the fact that I was very anemiac. However, I don't believe in birth control unless one is sexually active and I am not. So. I have opted to take iron pills instead. I would like to know why am I so physically drained. It's like I am a zombie and my skin becomes more pale during this time of the month. What's going on?

Answers:
I'm anemic too. Iron pills aren't enough when your on your period. Your body is losing so much iron when your menstrating. You should make sure to eat extra foods that have tons of iron in them along with your pill during this time and it should help a bit.
You should be taking vitamins.
Because you lose a lot of iron in the blood that you lose during menstruation. Iron is one of the main components of hemoglobin, which is a molecule in our blood that carries oxygen to the various parts of our body. So, with too little iron, you can't transport oxygen well and you feel tired and pale. Getting on the pill will make your flow lighter, so you won't lose as much iron. But, you still might be slightly anemic. I still am. I have to take supplements.
anemia does that to you, ask your doctor how much iron you should take, you might not be taking enough and you should also ask him or her if you should also take stool softeners while you are taking iron because iron can sometimes cause you to be constipated really badly.
That is probably your reaction to menstruating. Everyone reacts differently, and at different intensities of symptoms. If you flow is getting heavier when you are on pills, they are probably causing it, and that is the drain of energy. All your body's spare energy is going into pumping out the blood as quickly as possible.
It's from restraining the urge to strangle men during that time period. It's so draining on us ladies. ;)

Seriously its the iron. The anemia cuts down on the productiveness of your red blood cells. So you aren't getting as much oxygen and nutrients to the rest of your body, hence the tiredness. The iron can take some time to be fully effective (sometimes up to 6 months) so for the time being, you will have to live with it, and it will correct itself.
Fatique... it make you sleepy and drained... almost like you want to go to sleep! Thats all it is. If you are way to worried you can ask your doctor.
Women lose alot of iron during their period. You should take some Iron pills, or some Vitamins. Also, I have found that if I eat foods with Iron in them that it helps. Especially when I eat Cream of Wheat for breakfast. Hope this helps.
