Is this a myth or is it the truth?

Question:
Do birth control pills really make you gain weight?

Answers:
Sometimes, it's hard to determine causality. However, there is a correlation between starting some birth control pills and weight gain. I say "correlation" because it can't be determined for sure why people who take the pill gain weight over the next few months.

It's a hormone, so it could be "playing" with your body. Some say they gain water weight. But it could be many things.

For example, perhaps people start taking birth control because they're comfortable enough with their partner to stop using condoms. And many people will tell you that they gained weight when they were comfortable with their partner. So did the pill cause it, or did the person's less stringent body maintenance habits cause it?

But yes, people tend to gain weight when on the pill.
Yes - some women do experience this - others may not.
Shoveling food into your mouth is what makes you gain weight..
Yes, it does. It also depends on the person.
Sometimes they cause you to retain water, which may add a couple pounds to the scale.
sometimes, but its only around 1-5 pounds. I guess it depends on your body.
they may affect how much watter your body retains...so maybe
Some do like the combined pill but my doctor told me if I did 15 - 20 minutes of excersise a day it keeps it off..

The mini pill isn't supposed to make you gain weight but with 15 mins of excersise a day you can be sure of this..
It's not an absolute truth. It depends on how each person responds to the medication. Sometimes it's relative to the amount of hormones in the pill...if you gain weight on one, your doctor can switch you to a different bcp and you may not gain weight on that one. It's not the same for everyone across the board.
Yes they can, and do in many cases.
Yes. The amount of weight varies. It can be anywhere from half a pound to 10 pounds+. Weight gain is a big factor when taking birth control.
Marriage is another thing that makes women gain weight.
The birth control pill can cause an increased appetite in some women. So if you give into that and eat more than normal, you will gain weight. If you are mindful that the first few months on the pill will make you hungrier, and therefore continue to eat as you did, then you will not gain the weight.

It's not the pill itself that causes the weight gain, but the side effects of the pill (which is increased hunger) can lead to weight gain.
"Birth control pills can alter your water metabolism. Both the estrogen and progestin in the pills can cause fluid retention, a temporary and usually cyclic effect that often begins in the first month as a result of an increase in sodium. The estrogen in the pill can cause weight gain due to increased breast, hip, or thigh tissue, usually after several months on the pill. This causes swollen ankles, breast tenderness, discomfort with contact lenses, or a weight gain of up to five pounds. Reducing your salt intake moderately can help control this type of water retention.

Some progestin-dominant pills can cause appetite increase and permanent weight gain. Pill-related depression may also lead to increased appetite and weight gain. There are hundreds of reasons why women gain weight that are not pill-related. Talk with your health care provider about the extra weight you've gained, and, together, you may be able to find the cause. At Columbia, call x4-2284 to make an appointment with a provider at Primary Care Medical Services. Outside of Columbia, contact a women's health care provider. If your weight gain is determined to be pill-related, your provider can change your prescription to minimize any weight gain."
Yes birth control pills do retain some water in alot of people so you may put on some weight
MYTH

Some women gain weight and make up an excuse like it's the pill, when it is not. It's their own willpower whether they are on the pill or not.
I'm using an injection and I'm wondering the same thing.
