Answers:
isn't epidural the most effective?
well its obvious whats the most effective...epidural. This however makes it somewhat impossible to push the baby out and usually becomes a more complicated labour.
I had diamorphine for my 2nd baby and concentrated on my breathing. Unless you actually use an epidural its more about your frame of mind than the actual pain relief. You have to focus and be ready for the next contraction while knowing that it wont last forever, and if you breathe through it it will be easier to cope with.
epidural. it works great, but if you have a strong drug tolerance such as myself, it can wear off quickly, i had to have mine re-dosed 3 times with both of my children, and the 2nd child i got my epi about 45 minutes before i delivered her and they still had to re-dose 3 times

but it does work wonders, with my 1st child i had a 3rd degree episiotomy :(
I've given birth twice, and I have to say...

My two labors were completely different. My son wanted to come out fourteen weeks early. I was on bed rest for ten weeks, the last two of which I was on a muscle relaxant to stop contractions until I reached 36 weeks gestation. Once I reached that landmark (a Friday), I was taken off bed rest, taken off meds, and 16 hours later I was in the first stage of labor. He was born on Saturday. The labor went so fast there wasn't time to find an anesthesiologist, so I did it completely natural. I breathed, I pushed, he came out, I had my tear fixed, and now he's six.

My twins were completely different. I had a lot of contractions, but that was because my uterus was complaining about getting so big so fast after five years of rest. I was off bed rest and meds for five weeks before I went into labor, and I didn't realize I was in labor until I stood up to go to the bathroom and noticed amniotic fluid dripping down my leg. Of course, one of them was breach, so I had to have a C-section, which meant a spinal block at my hospital.

Looking back, I almost wish I'd had a spinal with my son, just because it was so much easier. No pushing, no work, I could just sleep and let everyone else worry about everything. But then I think about how amazing it was that I did what I did all on my own, and I'm glad I had the experience.

So, for my first labor, I had no medication; the best pain management technique was breathing. For my second, obviously it was the spinal. Before I got it, though, I was up to 6 cm dilated and contracting every 3 minutes; I was using breathing to control my pain then, too. I was also using the clock as my focal point because my husband was being a useless lump and the doctor and nurses were scrambling trying to find anesthesia, so it was up to me.
With my first baby I found an epidural very ineffective and slowed down an already very long labour.

Second time around I just had gas and air and sailed through.

Third time I had such lovely memories of the second time, and planned the same. Unfortunately, my little boy was o.p and got into distress. He was delivered with a ventouse. I have to say gas and air did nothing on that occasion but I was very firm about no epidural as I remembered how it made me feel.
I hated the tens machine and only tried that first time. It irritated me so much.
The epidural is most effective, But if you dont want the eidural, the jaccuzzi tub does wonders. I used the tub with my last child, and not only does it help you relax, but becasue ur more relaxed ur labour also speeds up.
three children and epidural .
First child bad birth nothing worked and was so druged up they had to use forcep
Second one epidural block whilst awake for c section which ws amazing pain free. (baby breech)
thrid child epidural however ended up emergancy c section due to ruptured uterus.
I did have warm bath in early labour this helped break waters. Gas and air made me swear and throw up.
Pethadine was in cookoo land with fairies so epidural by far best as kept my sanity lol
An EPIDURAL is the most effective. It does have some complications such as a longer labour(your numb from the waist down so cant move about which obviously prevents the pull of gravity)if the epidural is placed well, you shouldnt feel anything.PETHIDINE makes you feel a little sleepy and takes the edge off the pain(a bit like when you fall over when drunk.it hurts but you just dont care!!).GAS AND AIR takes the edge off the pain a bit like pethidine.TENS MACHINE just takes your mind off the contractions(doesnt stop the pain).WATER makes you feel more relaxed(doesnt stop the pain)BREATHING METHODS just makes you feel more in control of the situation your in(kind of like when your stressed and breath deeply).
epijoural all the way!! have complete faith and trust in me when i say this i PROMISE you!! xx
