I was on birth control for a week and stopped taking it and am now bleeding...is this normal?

Question:
i have read similar questions, but none are very similar to mine. i started taking ortho tri cyclen on a sunday, i quit taking it on friday bc i could not stop crying over everything. saturday night i started bleeding. i have read similar questions. i know that going off the pill after taking it for a long period of time can cause you to skip periods.but does going off the pill after just a week cause you to have an EXTRA one?

i also had sex twice on the saturday night. i'm scared that tissue was torn on the inside that is causing the bleeding. although, it is a lot of bleeding just for a cut, even one in the vaginal wall. however, it doesn't feel like "menstrual" bleeding if that makes sense.

i'm going to wait a day or two before attempting to see a doctor unnecessarily, but i was wondering if the bleeding would be caused from going off the BC after just a week.any similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!! thanks!

Answers:
The drop in hormones from stopping the pills causes your body to shed the lining of the uterus. It's totally normal, even after just a week. You just won't have much as the lining hasn't had much chance to build up.

It's what happens when you take the sugar pills of the pack. The level of hormones in your body drops, triggering the shedding of the lining.

Talk to your doctor anyway - there are many different birth control pills, and some won't cause the moodiness that you have been experiencing. If you explain your symptoms then they will be able to help with an alternative form of contraception.
if you stop taking the pill your body has a period.
It is normal to bleed once you discontinue the pill. You may even spot all month, until your next period. I have forgot to take my pill before, and I did spot until my next period.
It's normal to have heavy bleeding if you start the pill, then stop after a week. I had the exact same experience. I stopped after about 10 days of emotional hell, and I had VERY heavy bleeding for over a week.

It's not as serious as it feels. Hormones play a big role in preventing the uterus from bleeding, so when you get them completely out of whack, you can bleed a lot, even though it isn't your scheduled time to menstruate.

You should be fine in a week or two.
