The rhythm method descibed above is actually the way to try and conceive. The "snot" in your undies is not the egg (ovum) it's a sign that your body has ovulated and is now the most fertile it can be. So having sex on that day or after is much more likely to result in pregnancy. The unfertilsed egg is shed along with the lining of the uterus during your period.
Some women ovulate at odd times of the month (even during menstruation) and some release more than one egg in a month (that's how you can end up with fraternal twins), so there is generally no safe time of the month to have unprotected sex.
It doesn't work at all. There are too many risks, and there's no way to make sure that you aren't exposed to semen. Most men won't be able to control it properly, and even if they can you can still fall pregnant and catch diseases from the semen that leaks out before he ejaculates.
