As I remember from my biology classes, this is correct. That's part of the reason so many sperm are released; the more you start with, the more likely at least one will reach the goal. I also think one of the components of semen is supposed to help neutralize some of the acidity.

Average vaginal pH is about 3.8 to 4.0 (neutral pH is 7.0)
During the ovulatory period, part of the reason there is cervical mucus is to help the sperm to survive because the vaginal pH is not terribly conducive to them living for very long. So the mucus coats the vaginal walls and cervical face so that they have an easier time getting to the uterine cavity and also to help lower the acidity level.
Also, one of the ways that the pill works is by raising the acid level ever so slightly in the vaginal canal; this kills off the weaker sperm when they enter the passage.
when they say the vaginal acidity they mean inside only, out side is only skin.
