What would be the reason my Cervix is inflamed & irritated?


Question:
I am not pregnant. My doctor said I have a spot on my cervix that is inflammed and irritated. I have been bleeding for over a month. She is waiting for my Pap results to come back, but it seems to be taking forever. Any idea what it could be??

Answers:
There are many reasons that your cervix could be irritated. If you have ever been sexually active then you could have contracted HPV which causes cervical cancer &/or genital warts. It is pretty common for females to get HPV, which is why the Gardasil vaccine is so popular and important right now. Herpes, gonorrhea, or chlamydia can also cause your cervix to be inflamed, or you could have a bacterial infection, but your doctor should know that without waiting for Pap results.
