Pro's and Con's of Tampons?

Question:
My mom won't let me wear a Tampon becuase she said it is bad for your Vagina. Can you please list the pro's and con's of Tampons?

Answers:
well i wont let my daughter either. i do know they hurt sometimes and that if u dont use the right kind and the right size for the flow. and if u keep it in longer than 8 hrs. they can really make u sick. wish i could help more.
Well, I use them, and I've never had any problems...I guess I could list a few possibilities though.

1. If you don't insert it right, you could hurt yourself
2. If you don't change it when it soaks up as much blood as it can take, It can hurt
3. If you don't remove it for a while after it fills up with blood, you could bleed out or possible get an infection
4. They have a soakable-blood limit. They leak out if you don't change them in time.

that's all the "cons" i can think of, no here's the pro's

1. It provides extra protection
2. It soaks up most of the blood before it hits your underwear
3. They're more discrete than pads when hiding or carying them in your purse
4. They're easier to use (less messy in my opinion than pads)
5. They come with flushable canisters, so after you insert them, you don't have to throw anything away.

good luck
Ur mom is a good judge. The only advantage of tampons is that u can be active in sports etc. and also that the tampons r not showing thru ur dress.
Here are some things your mother might be referring to:

1) Tampons are bleached - the chemicals used for this are not the healthiest thing for that sensitive tissue. These chemicals dry out your vagina and make you susceptible to tiny little tears in your vaginal walls, which makes you susceptible to infection (and also lets those chemicals into your body)

2) (Maybe this is related to #1) Regular tampon-use has been known to alter the cells in the vagina

3) Tampons can cause a rare but serious illness called Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). Not many women get it, but you can die from it (my sister-in-law just told me a story about someone she knows who had it and died because she thought she just had the flu so she didn't get treated).

On the other hand, tampons are good because

1) You can be more active with them - swimming, comfortable running, etc.

2) They generally do a better job of absorption than pads - you don't have to worry as much about getting anything on your clothes by accident (you can use them WITH pads for double protection)

3) You feel cleaner during your period and can forget that you're even having it

4) You go without changing them longer than you can with a pad - that's really helpful for long trips or for when you will somewhere you might not feel comfortable changing a pad

5) If you use the ones with the cardboard applicators (or no applicator at all) they are much more environmentally friendly

Despite all the +'s, it really is up to your mom at this point, though. Don't go behind her back - she is just trying to do what is best for you.
