What do doctors usually do when you go in to get birth control?

Question:
Do they do STD tests and stuff?

And could you refuse to do any sorts of testing even if youre under 18? Would they still give you the birth control?

Answers:
They will do a pap and pelvic exam and ask you the normal "physical" questions. Make sure that you know when your last period started because they will ask. Also in case you don't know, you will want to schedule your appointment for when you are not on your period.

Two parts to answer the STD test question:

It will depend on where you go to the doctor. If you got to Planned Parenthood or a Health Department they will most likely not prescribe without the tests. A private doctor will most likely not push to test beyond the usual pregnancy test.

Secondly, if you have not been sexually active you should have no qualms taking the tests. If you have been you should take the tests whether you have qualms or not. You are not an adult yet and cannot possibly fathom what some of those diseases are capable of doing to your body.

In other words - get the darn tests!

Also, please make sure that you understand that birth control pills are not 100% effective and they can fail. Make sure if you have to take any other medications whild taking BCP's that you assure that they do not affect their effectiveness.

I'm not against birth control but you should be making informed decisions no matter what your age.
why are you scared
Birth control should be disallowed for under 18. The liberals who are for underage birth control and abortion without parents' knowledge need to be institutionalized.

Liberals always think that liberal solutions are the correct answers for liberal problems, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Medical family history.

I don't remember any other tests

Depends on your state. Many health clinic will prescribe to under 18 after a complete medical hisotry.
Why on earth would you refuse the tests ?
You have to get a pap smear, its mandatory no matter what age you are. The doctor will not prescribe BC to you unless you get that done.
Ask your age
Yes I believe a standard gyno test is in order, which is something you should be getting wether you are requesting birth control or not. If you are under 18 you may need parental consent on some things in addition to the fact that you will probably need their assistance in paying for this.
They will do a PAP, and explain that the bc does not protect against stds. If something comes up abnormal in ur PAP then they will notify u.. It will be 100% confidential and noone will Know other that the doctor and u. Don't be scared though. Everyone goes through it. Well women at least.
It depends on the doctor and the patient. They'll definitely ask you a few questions like : why do you want birth control? are your periods regular? are you sexually active? do you have nay abnormal discharge?
Then if your age warrants it, or answers to the above questions warrant it, they'll probably do a full pelvic exam, with a pap smear (to check for HPV and cervical cancer), and then they'll give you the script.

A few years ago I went on the pill simply to make my periods easier to handle and keep my face clear... I was under 18 and not sexually active so they didn't do the pelvic exam or anything. However, I just went to the gyno last week for refills and even though I am still not sexually active she did the full exam... it wasn't bad though so don't worry about it.

Hope this helps. :-)
They won't give you birth control unless you do the let them do their thing. If you're used to a guy seeing you naked, then a doctor should be a breeze. Trust me, they don't want to see your vagina anymore than you want them to.

They will just examine your vagina and make sure you have no STDs and that it is pretty much in good working order. It takes about 5 minutes, thats all. No biggie.
younwill have a pap smear done and yes they check for std's.before he prescribes any type of birth control he will do a pregnancy test! why would you want to refuse any tests? ddo you have something to hide or afraid to find something out? if you might have something its best to know so that you can recieve treatment and wont spread it along to someone else.good luck and always remember to have safe sex!
you have to 16 yrs old and yes they need to examine you and ask you ques. about your sex life and how frequent you have sex if you have std it will show up in the routine blood test..take care of your and your life the sex will come when your ready protect yourself and your partner needs to protect himself ..guys think it all about us kara
They will probably make you have a pelvic exam and pap smear to make sure you are healthy enough to take BC. That does not include STD testing unless you ask for it.

You can do a search for pelvic exams and find plenty of info about what happens during one of those. If you relax, they aren't nearly as bad as everyone makes them out to be.
Generally they will have you fill out a medical history form. Then they will do the normal stuff like take your blood pressure and weight. They will probably also do a pelvic exam which would include a pap smear which checks for any abnormal cells in your cervix (that could potentially cause cervical cancer). Some places automatically check for chlamydia but I don't think most places check for STDs unless you request it. If you have had unprotected sex then it would be a good idea to get tested for STDs. Some places may also require you to take a pregnancy test. Then they will normally ask you what type of birth control you are interested in using and explain your options. I really don't think that they would refuse to give you birth control for not having an STD test, regarless of whether or not you are under 18. Normally the only things that are required are the medical history and pelvic exam with a pap smear. Hope this answers your question.
you have to get a papsmear before you are prescribed and then every year...
