I'm 18, and I am not a virgin. I'm well educated about my body but I am curious to know how tight the vaginal walls can become after intercourse. I've had sex more than once, but a few days ago I attempted to insert a tampon for the first time and I couldn't fit it in. I was wondering if this is common.

Yes its quite common. (I am a woman). It takes time to learn how to insert the tampon. You need to do exactly as its described on the instructions i.e. lay back spread your legs and insert it slowly. Maybe you should use the smallest size and if it proves not to be enough to absorb all the blood, try the larger size but first learn how to insert it.
You may have bought one that is too large or you may need to lubricate it before insertion.
