Long Menstruation?

Question:
Hello Everyone,

My mother is 49 years old and been on her period for 15 days, When she do come on it's real heavy and she have to wear two pads, Is that normal for a women her age or anyone? Oh yeah, she is one of those mothers that don't believe in going to the hospital unless they bleeding out of their eyes or something lol.

Answers:
It sounds to me like she is going through menopause. Since she is 49 that is pretty normal. I have known friends who would have this one month & then not have a period for a couple of months.off & on with other symptoms like hot flashes etc. If this is happening every month though you might have her go to her Gynecoligist for an exam. She may have a Fibroid. They can do an ultrasound & see pretty quickly. No matter what, I would make sure she was seen by her doctor soon, to ease both your minds about the cause. As far as checking on menopause, they can run some quick blood tests to get her hormone levels to see where she is with that. Because she has been bleeding soooo much, they can run tests for Anemia & give her a prescription for a good Vitamin with Iron or an Iron supplement. Hope this helps.good luck!!
tell her to go to the obgyn and tell them about it...
well once i was on mine for like almost 2 weeks, it was because i was very stressed out, that could be it.
Hi there. I recently had a heavy period that lasted 8 weeks. I was put on two rounds of progesterone to stop it and if that didn't work they would have given me an ablation. Sometimes women just have heavier periods than normal and your mom is ready to hit menopause as well. If it continues into three weeks its time to call the doctor. By the way.. I had to wear two overnight pads and change those every two hours. It was horrible so I know what she must be feeling.
With her age, it's probably due to hormone imbalance. Unfortunately, she needs to see a doctor about it. I had to have a uterine ablation done (they cauterize the lining of uterus) because of this very thing. I had a 3 week heavy period for 3 months straight. No fun.

Watch for anemia.
Hon, this is not a hospital necessary problem for Mom, she is probably in peri-menopause. She'll stop having her period soon and that'll be it for her. Good luck in informing her of this, but she should see her gyn for confirmation, she may need to start taking hormones to ease menopause symptoms. She won't be sick but very uncomfortable for awhile.

Mom is gonna need all the support you and your brothers and sisters can give her and your Dad will also need to be patient with her.

Good luck and good living!
Could it be a hormone problem perhaps connected to the thyroid? On the link if you go to the web booklet first link in the symptoms it lists heavy and long menstrual cycles. You mom needs to get this checked out with some blood testing.

the most popular time for women to have thyroid problems is right after giving birth and around menopause

It is a more common problem then people think. and there can be complications if it´s not checked out and she takes for example iron... it can deposit in her thyroid.
