I have an aquaintaince, that has had a thyroidectomy. Would a calcium defciency cause her to act drunk?

Question:
I meant, no thyroid glands. She falls around a lot, and blames it on low calcium. Never heard of such a thing. Have You?

Answers:
Absolutely. Calcium is one of the three major electrolytes in the body. The others being Potassium and Sodium. Everything in you body requires these three things to be at normal levels or any number of symptoms could present themselves. Including cardiac, muscle and neurologic problems. The neurologic problems you speak of are very common decreased level of consciousness, affected balance while walking even falling asleep for no reason at all. Your thyroid gland secretes a hormone to harvest calcium from bone if the level in the blood drops to a certain point. If she has no thyroid gland the body can't balance it out. I have pasted a website that should help with your questions. She needs to start taking a her medications as prescribed such as levothyroxine and calcium. She should be going in regularly to her doctor to have her level checked. If you are after hours and she is presenting like this come into the ER we can give intravenous calcium and also check her levels of her other medications. The end result of hypocalcemia(low blood calcium) is cardiac failure.
could be her meds=try getting her to see the Dr
