Can Fluoxetine (antidepressant) Cause Irregular Periods?

Question:
I've recently been put on fluoxetine for depression, and I've not had a period this month! I've not had intercourse. I was wandering if Fluoxetine or any antidepressants can cause irregular periods.

Answers:
I took these for around 3 years and that never happened to me, would check with your doctor though
i'm not sure, i'm on fluoxitine myself but am also on the pill. can't remember reading that irregular periods are a side effects but i would read the information leaflet to find out. best thing to do would be to talk to your doctor or pharmasist.

defenatly feel for you though. as i said am on the same drug myself so i know how you feel :)

also, depression can supress periods, as can weight gain/loss, chnages in diet etc
Hi, there are two possibilities, sometimes antidepressants can raise prolactin levels (normally associated with other psychiatric drugs though) which can irregulate your periods. The other perhaps more logical answer is that depression in itself can affect hormones a bit like when someone is v stressed their period can be late. Best thing may be to chat to the Dr who prescribed the Prozac (fluoxetine). My periods changed when I was on antidepressants but I also have polycystic ovaries which made them irregular anyway.
