Does a smear hurt?

Question:
Honestly please. I just need to be prepered. I work better that way.

Answers:
Put it this way, if you fear having a smear test it can hurt you in the future as in the way that if you were to develop anything and it went undetected, it could be cancer etc
I am telling you this from experience, i had not had a smear test for 27 years and when i finally had to have one i ended up having a hysterectomy and then told that they found cancer, all that because i never went for my regular smear tests!
It does not hurt, can be a little uncomfortable but i think more embarrassing than anything else ,it will be over in a few seconds that's a lot better than 5 years of reg hospital checkups.!

All the best
No it does not. A bit uncomfortable yes.
I find them awful...but that's because I tense up. Try to relax (deep breathe etc) and it hurts less.maybe even not at all.
no just uncomfortable.all over in seconds.
it doesn't hurt at all, and you just have to think to yourself that it's a small sacrifice that may save your life in the long run
It's a little uncomfortable, but only lasts a few seconds.
Not at all.

The important thing is to relax, and after a second its all over.
i agree with first poster- it's uncomfortable at worst but a hell of a lot better than dealing with waht may go undetected otherwise
depends on you really
if you are relaxed you should only feel slight discomfort
if you are tense it'll be horrible
It doesn't hurt but it can be uncomfortable, especially if you tense up. Make sure you relax and breathe deeply. It's over before you know it and those few moments are worth knowing the status of your body.
I'm assuming you're talking about a pap smear. My best answer is it doesn't hurt so much as it's a minor twinge and then it's quickly over. Some women have touchy cervices. Mine doesn't like to be touched at all, and complains about it, too, with cramping, twinging and sometimes a bit of blood--a few spots. Doing nothing however, and ignoring the need to get screened for cervical cancer bespeaks a deathwish IMHO, tho'. So suck it up girl, and go do what you have to. Pap smears make childbirth look like eating popsicles. It's easy.
well they tell u to relax once you get into that undignified position on the bed, it depends where your mind is at the time, if the clamp is plastic it doesnt hurt so much if it metal (which is likely) it will be uncomfortable when it is inserted, and when they scrape..it feels really uncomortable and irritating, it always is painful afterwards for me, but hey everyone is different i guess
They are not painful. Can be a bit uncomfortable but the whole process lasts just minutes so it's over before you know it. Tell the nurse you are worried - she will put your mind at ease.
The insertion of the speculum is the most uncomfortable thing for me. But once the doctor has it in place I'm OK. The actual scrapping is a little uncomfortable, but it's done quickly, and that's it.
Sometimes the speculum they use to open you up hurts. If it does you just tell the doctor and they'll get a smaller one. The actual test doesn't hurt.
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...
It's a bit uncomfortable, that's all. It feels like the pressure you might get just before a period, and afterwards you feel slightly damp because they use KY jelly for the speculum. You might also have a bit of spotting for a couple of hours after. But it does not hurt. Breathe deeply, and try to relax. Chat away to the person taking the smear; it will help take your mind off what is going on down there!
no not really its just uncomferatble to be honest, i was the same as u before my first one and i got myself so nervous i threw up lol but honeslty i wondered what i was worrying about
coming from a bloke (i understand how its not relevant) im a 19 year old male, so learned from new age lessons lol

hope it helps darling :-)
If it is done slowly, gently and correctly, it is no more than uncomfortable. ( Yes this is of course a man speaking, but I go to the trouble of asking patients how they found it.)
I would not say hurt slightly uncomfortable for about 8 seconds
I think it's more embarrassing
no its slightly uncomfortable when they take the sample but its only for a couple of seconds and its over, the benefit of having the test outweighs the slight discomfort, dont worry about it.
yes! i know itts a necesary evil that could ultimately save ur life but it hurts like hell!! it stretches you and makes u want to pee, even tho u didnt need to before the thing began, but then u do.sorry to be brutal but its sore!!
bit uncomfortable, but you have to think this could save my life, so its worth it
Not really just a bit of a scratch so my wife says and a little uncomfortable
a smear doesn't hurt at all it can be a wee bit uncomfortable if you are very tense. its more embarrassing i suppose than sore but you soon get over the embarrassment when your my age (43), if you go to a well woman centre or woman's centre it will be done by a woman which most woman find easier its over in about 10seconds flat and well you have to do it, its so important.
Don't tense up as this can make it feel uncomfortable. It doesn't hurt at all and is usually over pretty quickly. The embarrassment is probably worse than the pain but once its done and your out of there it's forgotten! My mum was 26 when she had cervical cancer so don't put it off!
