I would probably call "ask a nurse". When did you have your last period? It could be break through bleeding, the color is what is a puzzle. Usually, blood is bright red when it is associated with a menstrual cycle. It could be old blood, but ahve you had this before, I would call a doctor and ask to speak with a nurse or call the local hospital and ask to speak with the ob department. Are you sure its coming from your vaginal area, do you have any blood coming from your anus, maybe a hemorrhoid?

That's your period. The stuff people say about how it's supposed to be bright red is total crap, because it comes in a variety of colours: it can be bright red, brown, rusty, purple, wine-coloured, or even black, and you'll probably see a few of these throughout your period. Don't worry about it.
