Why is it that when women are living together eventually they will start to menstruate at the same time?

Answers:
I've found that it isn't usually at the same time, but usually its within the same week.
I go to a women's college and whole groups of friends will cycle within the same week. But there are a lot of factors besides just who you're around such as weight, nutrition, and exercise. Groups of friends/roommate tend to have similar habits and I think that has more of an effect on your cycle than the pull of living together.
I've never heard anything like that before
It has got to be a hormonal "scent" that we give off that stimulates other women to produce certain hormones. I don't know if anyone has tested this phenomenon, but my boss is in for it around the 20th of the month! It seems like all the women I work with are on the same cycle too. Weird.
I've heard that too. And also just a group of friends that spend a lot of time together can start their periods around the same time. The only thing is i'm not sure why lol. It really doesnt make any sence.
Who said that?
I think your misunderstanding it. I think its more that it sometimes seem that women menstruate around the same time when living together after all there is a 1 in 4 chance its not that out of the question.
yes its true, seen it many times, you sync
ps i feel like a 20+ again knowing more about womens biology than women...too many womindependants nowdays
Check out the following Google Search ( menstrual cycle synchronicity ) ( correct spelling)

"This amazing phenomenon was first described in 1971 by researcher Martha McClintock, now with the University of Chicago. Having asked around a bit, I'd say it's common knowledge among women, but I'll bet not one male in 50 has ever heard of it. Women do have their little secrets.
Synchronous menstruation has been observed among mothers, sisters, and daughters who live together, and sometimes among women who simply work together. McClintock tells of seven female lifeguards who started out one summer with widely scattered periods. Three months later they were all menstruating within four days of one another.
A study of 135 residents of a women's college dorm confirmed the effect. Most of the cycle shifting occurred within the first four months and was usually complete after seven months. Fortunately for the dorm's plumbing, the whole building didn't synchronize, just roommates and close friends. As often as not, the women were unaware of what had happened. Later research has suggested that synchrony is caused by some sort of scent cue, or pheromone."
So you see it's true.
I know it happens a lot, but I don't know why.
It also happens in colonies of monkeys; the females menstruate at the same time. If I remember correctly, it is a safety device for the social group - it keeps the number of pregnancies down because the alpha male or males can't possibly mate with all the females in such a short period (!) This means that the young that are born are not a food-threat to the colony and get better care. Seems monkeys are clever enough to understand that sometimes less is best.
Perhaps it's the same for women, some primitive genetic mechanism that has clung on through all our evolution. A natural form of birth control going back to the beginnings of human social structures? If all the women in a social group were constantly fertile, a lot more babies would be born and many of them, the weakest ones, would die, which would mean a waste of physical resources for a lot of women - being pregnant and giving birth and providing milk etc. sound very natural and simple but are still depleting, even now. Probably much more so in our ancient past.
Just an idea.
Yup, really close friends at that aswell.
I'm in Cali n my gurls are in Arizona. n we all have our periods within the same week.
Weird huh!!
Also Heard things like this but its not logical at all..becuase, periods only depwends on ur inside physical conditions...however, as the gap of period is so small (28 days usually), and so many girls live together, almost it matches with one another may be having gap of very small days and it seems like every one started at the same date.
Hope i could give a logical answer...
This is due to one women being affected by the others pheromones and menstruation become synchronised. This is a throw back to groups of apes hunting and living together. It was important that they all had their oestrous cycle together, got pregnant at the same time and gave birth at the same time. This meant that when the group moved on, all the females and their offspring were ready to move at the same time. If a female was still pregnant at that time she would not be able to keep up when the group moved on.
haha i was talken about that today...i think its good because im not alone when i qo through it :)
