Going on birth control to regulate cylces?

Question:
My doc has suggested that I get on birth control for a couple of months to help regulate my cycle. I called bull on that one that studies have shown that if you are irregular before birth control, that the person will likely continue to be irregular even after birth control...

I kind of think that it was birth control that completely screwed up my cycle in the first place (got off of it 1 year and 5 months ago, and haven't gotten pregnant).

But now I'm interested, how will going on birth control for a couple months regulate my cycle even after I get off of birth control? O.o From what I have learned, is that I will get irregular once I get off of it anyway.

Plus, getting on b/c seems kind of counterproductive to getting pregnant. O.o

Answers:
People who have started menstruating relatively recently (eg in the last several years) are often irregular. Figured I'd throw that out there, just in case.

Some people are just always irregular. Are you attempting to get pregnant? If not, then there's not much reason to attempt to regulate your cycle unless you have bad symptoms. If yes, then you should do what your doctor suggests for the simple reason that this will help him or her rule out things that may be stopping you from becoming pregnant. You could try homeopathic medicines instead, but be sure to discuss them with your doctor first.

Also... this is silly, but do you spend time with plenty of people in close environments? Spending time with both men and women helps to regulate your cycle-- women tend to syncronize with the women in their households (my freshman hall was very much in sync, actually) and men's pheromones do something like help induce the cycle to be active.

(I wasn't regular until 5 years after I started having my period, and even now when I'm on summer vacation and away from most of my friends my cycle slows down immensely)
Our society is hooked on drugs, legal and illegal. If you feel it is not nessicary, don't do it. There's no telling what side effects it may have down the road.
My periods have always been irregular. Birth control only regulated them when I am on them, but as soon as I get off them, they go back to being irregular. Being on birth control isn't something I would recommend if you are trying to get pregnant. Ask your Dr. to give you something to help get pregnant instead. As long as you have a period, you can get pregnant, being irregular won't stop that, but can delay it. I was once told by my Dr. to have intercourse ten days after I started my cycle. Your cycle will be done by then, and from what he said, your most fertile then. I have two kids from this method and my husband and I tried for two years before hearing that advice. Good Luck to you!
