Has any one tried the contraceptive injection - any thoughts on it good/bad?

Depot injection is indeed quite popular at the moment. It is reliable, convenient and only needs one injection every 12 weeks. Its main side effect is that it may cause erratic, and persistent bleeding for the first 12 weeks ( and occasionally longer). Once it settles down it often stops the period all together. which many women find desirable. There is some evidence that if it is started in very young women it may cause premature osteoporosis.

Weight gain can occur with any hormone contraception, and I don't think the depot is worse than the others. I dislike the implants, which can be difficult to remove. The other method of contraception that is increasing in popularity is the Mirena, progesterone coil.
All I know is that depovera can make you gain a lot of weight.
i hate it.i was on it a few yrs ago and i bleed the whole time while on it and then when i got off it i didnt bleed for 9 months.but it is different for everybody.but it was not for me
♥ If you are talking about Depovera I think it has its ups and downs just as with every product or medication.

PROS~ It is 99% effective, you only have to worry about 1 shot every 3 months, injected directly into your bloodstream so its more effective.

CONS~ It makes you have the muchies [[which in turn make people eat]] and they gain weight.

I was on it and I did gain ALOT of weight, however I didnt try to curb the munchies. If you can eat healthy snacks or curb them then you shouldnt have any problems. Also I didnt bleed at all when I was on it... no period... which I enjoyed because my cramps were HORRIBLE! However once I got off this it did take awhile for my system to get back to normal. Good Luck!
Are you referring to the Depo-Provera shot that's given every three months?

If yes, then: I was on the shot for 3 years, I LOVED IT! I didn't have a period, didn't have any PMS, I was advised to take calcium supplements because over a long period of time it can lead to an early onset of osteoporosis.

BUT, I have heard that a lot of people have had some very complex problems, including mood swings, major weight gain, and continually bleeding.

ALSO, I have been off it for about a year, and I am STILL not regular - I didn't have any period for the first six months, and it's been fairly irregular since I started. I hear this is common. If you are also looking to get pregnant it can take up to two years of trying once you go off the shot.

Hope I have been helpful!

P.S. I didn't have any problems with any weight gain (I actually lost about 10 pounds during the years that I was using the shot) - and i never heard about the munchies.hmmm
works very well , no periods,
gain LOADS of weight (about 1/2 stone or more per injection interval) stay away from it, steroid based
as i read through the answers given to this question i have to add that there is also a decrease in libido, depo provera was originally intended for use with sex offenders to decrease their sex drives... just a thought
I am currently on the depo provera shot that you get once every 3 months. I was told to prevent any bleeding, you must wait until your next cycle begins and then get the shot during that time. Some people bleed the entire time and some do not have a period at all! I like the shot, I went and got the first shot in June during my cycle and the only thing that happened was I spotted for a day a couple weeks later.
Just like any other birthcontrol, you are not protected from pregnancy until after the 30 day waiting period. Then for the 2nd shot and then on, after 3 months, you have a 14 day window to go and get your shot.
Talk to your ob/gyn!!
a few of my friends have n they didnt like it.one put on loads of weight and one went over hormonal.bad thing is theres nothing you can do till its left your system.
I'm using it at the moment and i think it's great!

It is effective as soon as it's injected and releases hormones over 12 weeks, when you get the next injection, and its over 99% effective.

From when i first had the injection i had one period and didn't have any more after that which was definetly an advantage!

Weight gain is quite common apparently, but i luckily didn't get that.

Also due to the decrease in estrogen caused by the injection, can cause a loss of bone mineral density which may increase the risk of osteoporosis in severe cases. However this is only really the case for adolescents.

And as for having the injection itself i could hardly feel that and i usually hate them.

Here are some links i found helpful when deciding whether or no to have it
It tricks your body into thinking that you are pregnant, so that you normally don't have a period and gain weight. Not the usual 2-4 pounds but severe amount of weight. After going off the shot, your monthly cycle will take about 3-6 months to become regular again. Most females complain of the severe weight gain. After I had my daughter I tried the shot and gained almost 150 pounds even though I exercised and ate a healthy diet daily. Once off the shot I started dropping the weight.
i had this around 7 yrs ago. it was awful for me as i had a continous period. my doctor then told me to have the 2nd jab as it may take a while for my body to accept it,only again i bled for the entire time so in total i bled for nearly 7 months by the time it wore off, costing me a packet in sanitary products.i dont remember putting on any weight tho.i wanted to try it originally as i found it hard swallowing the pill as it got stuck and dissolved in my throat. i was told after trying the injection contraception that my body obviously does not agree with it and that i was not to go back on it nor could i have the implant as apparently it was the same stuff only releasing it over a longer period? he actually was not very helpful at all but i dont see him any more. i do have friends on the injection and they have said they have no problems other then not having a period which they dont miss. a couple have said they put on weight, but as i said i didn't.everyone reactsdifferently to each contraception you can only but try as i did, it will either agree with you or not then you will have to find something else that will.i'm just unlucky i have never found anything that actually does but many do with no problems. get some leaflets if your really worried to way up all kinds of protection. good luck.
