Is it alright to take cough syrup while breatfeeding?
Question:
Answers:
YES, if you get the right cough syrup.
I took Robitussin DM while I was pregnant and breastfeeding.
It doesn't have any alcohol in it. It's not the strongest cough syrup out there, but it did help my symptoms. And my kids are fine.
No...you shouldn't take cough syrup because it will be transfered to the baby if you breast feed. If you are sick and must take cough syrup. You should pump some bottles before you start taking the medicine or switch to formula. Also you shouldn't breastfeed for a good 24 hours after taking cough syrup. I hope all is well. God Bless
Prescription and over-the-counter cold remedies (decongestants, antihistamines, and cough remedies) are safe to take while breastfeeding. Even codeine-containing cough syrups are safe to take before bed, if necessary, for a few nights, unless your baby is a newborn. You may want to pump and dump in this case, though. (Use a cough syrup that contains dextromethorphan (DM) if you are unable to sleep.) Use short-acting medicines that are taken 3-4 times a day and try to take them just after breastfeeding. Try single-ingredient medications (either decongestants or antihistamines) before trying combinations.
You can contact your doctor to verify this if you want.
