My mother -in-law is going through the menopause and is suffering from intense hot flushes/ sweats/insomnia?
Question:
Answers:
red clover, black cohosh, sage, soya (see link 1), agnus castus, evening primrose oil or starflower oil.
hope one of these helps her. my mum swore by evening primose capsules when she was going through the menopause.
lachesis mutus..i use it and it works well..i think
Soy products are said to alleviate some of the symptoms because they act like a woman's natural hormones. I think I read that in a Reader's Digest article. My mother had estrogen sensitive breast cancer and isn't allowed to have any soy products because of that similarity. You might have her eat some tofu!
In addition I just found this article on WebMD about soy & menopause. Check it out!

She needs to go to a doctor and get on hormone replacement.
black cohosh and or starflower oil capsules work well apparently. not taken them personally but friend takes them and is much better for it. chinese herbalists can also help. just make sure they r reputable and dont use banned weird substances like rhino horn or tiger penis. (ugh y on earth did someone try that in the first place)
primrose oil tablets, worked for a friend of mine.
Oil of Evening Primrose worked for my mam & aunt, ask the assistant as there seems to be newer & better products available all the time. Also go to the Dr for regular check ups.
God knows, but I'm buying you a crate of alcohol. You'll need it!
Good luck!
Nope, the most successful medication for menopausal symptoms is still HRT. Plant oestrogens from places like H&B of no long term safety data. Look how long it took to quantify and appreciate the problems with conventional HRT.
I am the same, Holland & Barret told me to consult GP before taking anything as i am on tablets for high blood pressure. Many ladies have told me that after stopping HRT they get all the sweats etc again, so i feel HRT is on delaying the inevitable.
P.S. Dr Frank, if you are a Dr of many years how come you spend so much time on here answering questions, hope your not neglecting your patients!
I am going through this myself, and hate being urged to take HRT.
I note that the doctor dispels the use of natural products over HRT citing no long term studies regarding their efficacy. This may be true, but just how long has HRT be around that we can say with confidence that it is ok?
The medical profession love to use the 'scientific method' as proof of everything. They especially love to medicalise women's natural processes, eg childbirth, breastfeeding, menopause etc.
Simple remedies are good. Get a hand held fan, wear less clothing, meditate, relax. Pay attention to the changes in your psychological development too, the issues are not just around physical processes. Hot sweats are just that, hot and sweaty, but it doesn't go on forever.
