If you stay consistent and keep running a little everyday then you will be able to run longer and longer without any pain. I suggest running a lap then jogging a lap, or walking a lap, then you won't strain yourself and be in pain the entire time. And each day increase it a little.
There are other excercises you could do. Bike riding is really fun and it's rewarding going up a hill because you get to go down it, which is the best feeling. You could also go swimming or do aerobics. Don't think running is the only exercise.
try having a running buddy you can talk to. when i first started running, it hurt a lot, but if i was talking to a buddy who was running with me, then I would forget about it. If none of your friends will do it, listen to music and really think about the words. Don't focus on your running (unless your doing hurdles!) and just keep going. It will go away in about 5
minutes.

if you can swim do laps it will tone and burn most if not all fat,and if you can do it about 2 to 3 time a week you will see a diff. in a mo. (u will get ur wind and tone up...its been done)
