AA vs Rehab?

Question:
Can someone kick an alcohol addiction just by attending AA meetings or is actually going to rehab better?

Answers:
If you're going to be paying for it: don't.

Rehabs are a great way to stay away from drugs and alcohol for 30 days, the first 30 days which are the hardest, but that's about it. Most rehabs are nothing more than a 30-day indoctrination into AA.

AA will work only if the person is motivated to quit. AA has a success rate of 5% (AA's Triennial Survey and AA Board of Trustees and Harvard researcher George Vaillant), quitting on ones own has a success rate of 5%. However, people exposed to AA are 4-5 times more likely to end up binge drinking after being exposed to AA than those who attempt quitting on their own (Brandsma study) and 3-4 times as likely to end up dead (Vaillant called AA's first year mortality rate rate "appalling").
Depends on the person.
