I do yoga and half of the time I think I am doing poses incorrectly, how do I know if I have done them right?

The best explanation I've been given by a teacher is that you learn to do the pose correctly and how it feels, and then every time you do the pose afterward, you aim for the same feeling.
But as you've explained that there are no yoga instructors near you, here's another possible solution. Yoga Journal has a series of DVDs called Yoga Step-By-Step (link included as a source below). They're great for walking you through each step of building the pose, plus there's a function on the DVD called "Chalk Talk," which teaches you alignment principals as well as common mistakes and how to fix them.illustrated both in pictures (to watch before you try) and by talking it through so you can listen while you try the pose or vinyasa again. There's a series of DVDs under this title. They're $20 each on Yoga Journal's website, but try Target or Walmart. They may have better pricing.

When you bend back and stretch and can see your own buttcrack, I am sure you have gone "above and beyond".
How about getting a video out of the Library or at a bookstore? There are some really good ones out there and they are not very expensive. I won't recommend any one in particular because yoga is very personal and there are so many different styles. I know that I have found vidoes to be really really helpful. And anything by the Giam group are great!

you can buy a book that teaches you poses of yoga. employ your friend or anybody else free for a while to check your pose and compare it with the one given in the book. eventually you can correct yourself.
Go to http://yoga.about.com/ for demonstrations of poses. I learned how to do yoga through books many years ago and it takes time.
Also check out any DVD's your library may have or order DVD's online.
Books that show examples of poses, and describe exactly how each body part should feel. DVD's are also helpful.
After watching others do the poses, try doing a few poses in front of a mirror to see how you're lining up. Although it's ok if you look a little different, as each person has a different reach for each pose. The important part is that you feel challenged, but not strained.
Namaste! :)
