Has anyone heard of using antibacterial wipes, such as Lever or Wet Ones, on a yeast infection diaper rash?

Question:
The pediatrician said to use soap and water to clean the babies bottom, but when that is not accessible use antibacterial wipes.

Answers:
unless your doctor is trying to prevent a secondary bacterial infection, i cannot imagine why he would tell you that! maybe because most doctors have only a cursory education in microbiology (which is also why they keep handing out prescriptions for antibiotics for viruses).

a diaper rash caused by yeast will not clear up if you are using harsh anti-bacterial wipes. the chemicals (even soap) have no effect on yeast but will prevent the normal flora (good bacteria) from regrowing.

are you using an anti-fungal cream for the rash?

the best thing you can do is allow as much air as possible to reach your baby's tush. this is not practical with very young infants, but if your baby is a toddler, allow the baby to run around without a diaper as much as you can.

if your baby is old enough and has no problem with dairy, feed the baby yogurt.

do not use a corn-starch based powder. the starch is actually a food source for yeast. i know the experts recommend not using talc, but if you are careful not to create a cloud of powder that the baby will inhale, i think talc is fine.

good luck!

response to a previous post:
yeast infections are commonly found externally. yes, they can be internal as well. but a lot of diaper rashes are caused by yeast overgrowth.
NO, not me but I don't see it hurting the baby.
