Why won't a really deep itch go away even when you have scratched yourself raw? And what causes it?


I have looked up causes of itching and how when you scratch and scratch away the irritant your brain will signal no more itch, but why in the heck do you get those itches that you just can't stop even when you have scratch yourself to death? Something with nerves?
