Do smokers not realize that their house, car, clothes, etc. completely smell of smoke?
If not, is this becuase the membranes in their nose can no longer smell anything as a result of smoking? I know smokers who say they are considerate and won't smoke around people but they still wreak of it??

As a former smoker, I can tell you that while they think they might carry around the smell a little (and I mean trace amounts), that it is easily covered up by Febreeze or perfume. I even used to think that a strong mint gum would cover it. I had no idea how strong a smell it was until after I quit.
Part of it was definitely denial. I didn't want to admit how noticeable it was to other people, because then I'd have to think about quitting. Part of it was stubbornness ("No one's going to tell ME to quit smoking!") And part of it was that it just flat out didn't smell that strong to me, my sense of smell was that affected.
A smoker IS being considerate by not smoking around you, since it's the second-hand smoke that will hurt you, not the smell that clings to their clothes. I'm sure on days you go without antiperspirant you don't think you smell that badly either, but I'm sure there are others who would beg to differ. You get used to your own smell.
The thing is, though, it's an addiction, and a legal one at that. Even if I'd realized how much smell I carried around with me, I don't know that it would have made a difference. I probably would have just worn more perfume.

what are anti-oxidents, and what nutritonal value do they have?
How is that any of your business?I'm highly allergic to most perfumes & after shave lotions. But, I've never been compelled to demand others stop wearing it because they reek of it.
You raised the issue about the smell, not the effects.
But, if as much money had been spent attempting to prove perfume causes disease as has been "proving" second hand smoke causes disease, I'm sure it would be proven.
I'm nearly 60 years old and have never known anyone who suffered any effects from "second hand smoke." Other than listening to people whine about it.
its true that you sometimes lose your perception of smoke.. but in general people care about smoking more than they do the smell.. in fact the smell of tobacco sometimes makes me fiend for one.. even though i no longer smoke.. i do find the smell of STALE smoke repulsive..

I didn't realize how strong it smelled until I quit.As a former smoker.Yes I could smell it and it was nasty. I certainly don't miss that.
But when they say they are considerate and won't smoke around people.that means they won't actually smoke around them so they won't breath in the 2nd hand smoke.
(oh by the way, its not the smell that causes cancer, its the toxins in the actuall smoke getting into your lungs. Don't hear of nose cancer too much from second hand "smelling")
It doesn't mean they'll change because you don't like the way they smell. Would you say the same thing about someone who had a general b.o. problem because deodorants/antiperspirants just don't work with them after a long days work. or someone who worked at a fast food restaurant and wreaked of stale grease?
actually, smoker's really DON'T know how bad they and there clothes smell, I guesss you just get immune to it..
as a reformed smoker, I can NOW smell it and it freaks me out!
Smokers cannot smell the smoke in their own homes or on their clothes because they smell it all the time when they are smoking and get used to it.
What surgical stitch shares its name with a fused joint connecting two skull bones?
I have quit smoking 2 years as of May 3rd, and a smoker does not realize the oder that they are caring around. They dont mean to offend anyone, its just part of the downside of thier habit. Everyone wants to put down smokers instead of working with them. Yes, it is a bad habit but look how most smokers go out of thier way without even being asked to work with the non-smokers, they go out and stand in the rain, or the cold, or the heat , or the wind or most of the above without anybody even asking them to. Nobody thinks about this while they are sitting around knocking the smokers. If it is a friend, maybe mention to them about the cigarette smell being so strong, they might appreciate the thought. Most people would like to quit, but it is not as simple as saying I quit. I know, I smoked for 30 years and spent the last 10 trying to quit.More Questions and Answers
