Why is it when I'm overly tired, I can't sleep!!?

Question:
For ex. If I get 4hours of sleep, I can't fall asleep the following night even though I am so tired I can barely keep my eyes open. Why is this?
Usually I get 8 hours.

Answers:
It could be the cat ears in your head.
I don't sleep well when I get exhausted also.
I have no idea why.

Other Answers:
Stress, maybe.
I don't know. I have that problem a lot. The best thing, I've found, is to write before I go to bed. I love to unwind that way.
think must be the hormones. try listening to classical music
Try exercising alot and lay off caffiene.
drink green tea...this will help u a lot
Probably because your body's tired, but your mind's awake or vice versa. Go out and get sleeping pills. I have the same problem and those pills work wonders.
no need to worry!!

i do so.........
Turn off the television, play something soft and quiet on the radio, and read a book that doesn't require a great deal of thought, just enjoyment. And don't drink anything with caffeine in it a few hours before you go to bed.
i'm not sure why you cant sleep but try going to bed early and then if you cant sleep listen to music or read a book becuase if you watch tv you are consentrated on the show and not on sleeping... try that let me know how it works ---- ps remember its gonna take a little while before your body gets used to it
When you're severely deprived of sleep, your central nervous system is overworked. As a result you get nervous and that's why it's harder to sleep. I recommend doing something relaxing like reading a relaxing novel, meditation, relaxation music before you go to bed so that your mind can calm down.
It sounds like you have a big problem. You should try to bore yourself with some TV or read a book while in bed. Maybe you should also try to change your sleeping habits. There are details missing, like if you have a strangge work schedule (like a doctor or nurse) or if you're going to school and work at the same time.
When you don't get enough sleep and you get over-tired, then there's certain chemicals that are released into your system that basically work against any efforts to sleep.... it's similar to an adrenaline rush, only mild and longer lasting, if that makes any sense.

Also, it's a psychological thing.... you expect to not sleep, and you sit and wait to fall asleep.... like the "a watched pot never boils" saying goes!

Try some relaxation exercises, and try to not focus on whether you are falling asleep, or not.... basically, cut out the worrying about it and just trust that your body WILL fall asleep if it's in dire need, ya know? =) It'll be alright!

Have a great night!
maybe its because you dont get enough excersie during the day. your typically susposed to get your herat rate up for 20 mins a day. your brain is probably tired but your body still has energy. try doing cardio for a while and it should work wonders.
I believe (and I have this, too) that your brain pattern is altered by being super tired so that the rhythm can't slow enuff to get to alpha, and the delta of dreams. I go right into a dream to fall asleep, and have all of my life.
More and more fantasy elements mix into reality, and sometimes it makes me laugh and disrupts things!!
It's called insomnia. The reasons why you are having it could be many.
many people experience it from time to time
it could be stress
it could be a new med you are taking
it could be depression - only you know how you are feeling
it could be PMS- only you would know if it's that time
it could be allergies, arthritis, heart problems and even thyroid problems. And this is often somthing you will not know unless you get blood work.
it could be jet lag- if you have recently traveled. Even by car - it can be hard to relax
it could be too much caffiene or alcohol or even a withdrawl of these
or it could simply be too much noise or too hot to sleep
Sleeping pills are not a good idea
what you can do is about 1/2 hr before you go to bed, have a piece of fruit and a glass of milk.
It has something to do with releasing chemicals in your brain that in turn releases other chemials that tell your body it's bed time.
The more you don't sleep, the more anxious aobut it you become. And the more anxious you become -the more you don't sleep.
Try taking a hot bath before bed.
I've also heard that a cup of tea works magic for some-- if all these dont' work- see a Dr.
