There several factors that can work against you. I believe the shape of the cornea is one, if you have a astigmatism, whether or not your tear ducts produce enough tears, and the thickness of your retinas. You should as the doc what was the deciding factor.
I was borderline due to my tear ducts.
-9.50 and -8.50 or +9.50 and +8.50? Are you nearsighted or farsighted? Who told you, you were not a candidate?
I work for a LASIK center and if it is -9.50 and -8.50 we have done plenty of surgeries with this correction but...it depends on all your other measurements - amount of corneal tissue you have, shape of your cornea, etc. If those aren't typical then you may not be a candidate. If you are +9.50 and +8.50 there is a special procedure for that called RLE (Refractive Lens Exchange) or you can do LASIK but it will not give you a full correction.
