Is your thumb medically considered a finger?

Question:
this is to prove my boyfriend wrong. i won't say what i think, just give me your opinion. without a smart-aleck answer. thank you!

Answers:
The thumb is not considered a finger. The fingers are moved by muslces in the forearm that all have the word "digitorum" in them, such as flexor digitorum superficialis, which has four tendons that each go to the four fingers. The thumb has its own set of muscles that all have the word pollicus in them, like flexor pollicus brevis. I hope this helps, but you are obviously going to pick the answer that goes with whatever you said to your boyfriend.

Other Answers:
Yes. Its considered the first finger I believe.

The thumb is medically considered a digit, just the same as the other digits. Not a finger.

Spacecowboy is correct. The thumb has two segments (two phalanges) and the fingers have three segments (three phalanges). So, a normal hand has one thumb and four fingers for a total of five digits.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.
