I was just told by a Pulmonary Doctor?

Question:
that if you have a cat as a pet you will eventually get asthma. Does anyone know if this is true?

Answers:
Im a respiratory therapist and an Asthma awareness educator.. not sure where your doc got his degree, but no, not true.. while it is true that patients who have a mild allergy to cats can develop more severe symptoms the more they are exposed to the pet, owning a cat will not cause asthma without a predisposition to asthma related symptoms to begin with.

Other Answers:
I doubt that it is true in every case, possible in some, but certainly not in all. I have known many people with cats and they don't have allergies OR asthma. Find a new pulmonologist.

No, i work for a pulmonologist and if you already have asthma it will make your symptoms worse. Or if you are allergic to kats you may have symptoms. i doubt that this is entirely correct However docters tend to know what they are talking about..
you could go for a second opinion to another docter.
