Answers:
I agree with Donna. Your friend needs professional help ASAP.

I suffer from major depression and a little over 2.5 years ago I tried to kill myself. I ended up in a regular hospital for about a week. Then, when I got out I went and self-admitted myself into a behavioral hospital, where I stayed for another week. Once I got out of there, I admitted myself into their day program, and I was in that for about 5 months.

Now, I just see my Psychiatrist and Therapist, and take a boat load of anti-depressants. The good news is I no longer have the suicidal thoughts like I use to. I still have them every once in a while, but they are very brief and only once a week or so, where as before I use to think about it all day long.

I don't know how old your friend is, but if she is a teenager and under age I would try to get her to go to her parents herself and let them know she's having problems and needs help. You can even offer to be there with her to provide moral support. The reason I think you should try to get her to do it is you would not be breaking her confidence and it's better if she wants help.

If she is old enough to be able to go to a doctor on her own, then I would try to get her to get some help for the same reason as above. It would also be great if she would tell her own family, but take one step at a time. Just offer to be there to support her.

People who suffer from depression need a good support system, so eventually she will need her family and other friends, but only if they are positive people.

She also needs to stay away from alcohol, because it's a depressant.
