According to alternative medicine advocates, WATER THERAPY is the use of water to improve health. This water therapy consisted of drinking more than a quart of water to clean out the intestines. However, some claim that this amount of water can lead to water poisoning and is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by a very rapid intake of water. Plasma sodium levels below 100 mmol/L (2.3g/L) frequently result in cerebral edema, seizures, coma, and death within a few hours of drinking the excess water.
The "WATER CURE" was a form of therapy developed in 18th century England by a doctor named Richard Russell. It generally consisted of varieties of water-related treatment — bathing in seawater, the drinking of sea water, and activities reminiscent of modern day spas. However drinking too much saltwater made more people ill than curing them.
Hydrotherapy, formerly called hydropathy, is probably the oldest form of medical treatment. It involves the use of water for soothing pains and treating diseases. hydrotherapy is utilized in treating arthritis, burns, musculoskeletal disorders as well as for stroke patients with paralysis. The scientific evidence does not always support claims of effectiveness for this treatment.
The appliances and arrangements by means of which heat and cold are brought to bear on the economy are(a) Packings, hot and cold, general and local, sweating and cooling; (b) hot air and steam baths; (c) general baths, of hot water and cold; (d) sitz, spinal, head and foot baths; (e) bandages (or compresses), wet and dry; also (f) fomentations and poultices, hot and cold, sinapisms, stupes, rubbings and water potations, hot and cold.
A hot tub is a manmade large tub or small pool full of heated water and used for soaking, relaxation, massage, or hydrotherapy.
A thermal bath is a warm body of water. It is often referred to as a spa, which is traditionally used to mean a place where the water is believed to have special health-giving properties, though note that many spas offer cold water or mineral water treatments.
Balneotherapy involves the treatment of disease by bathing. It may involve hot or cold water, massage via moving water, relaxation or stimulation. Many mineral waters at spas are rich in particular minerals (silica, sulfur, selenium, radium) which can be absorbed via the skin.
There are certain conditions in which mineral water treatment is distinctly contra-indicated. Advanced arteriosclerosis, any form of serious organic visceral disease, advanced cirrhosis, pulmonary tuberculosis with a tendency to hemoptysis, much elevation of temperature or emaciation, are all entirely unsuited for this form of treatment.
Mental diseases other than very mild cases of depression should be considered inapplicable.
Neuralgic affections and the later stages of neuritis, especially when dependent on gout or rheumatism, are often relieved or cured. Abdominal venosity (abdominal plethora), a feature of obesity, glycosuria, &c., are extremely well fitted for this form of treatment.
Most of the treatments above are considered a form of water therapy even though they are listed seperately. All treatments should be under the supervision of a Doctor. At the least, a Doctor should be consulted before water treatment begins.
