Brain dead and not understanding?

Question:
My grandfather had a massive heart attack, his heart stopped 32 times, and then he was in a coma. We later found out that he had a stroke and was brain dead. They say he couldn't hear us because of that. But he would squeeze hands and when the priest came in to bless him he smiled. They say it was just his muscles, but I believe he knew. Is it possible that while in a coma and brain dead the person can hear still?

Answers:
Anything is possible! Doctors are just telling you what they think or what they have found in other cases. If you think about it, if he's in a coma, how do they know what he's hearing or thinking. I'm sure they will say that he has no brain activity, but they do not know what he is feeling! My niece had a lot of problems and wasn't supposed to make it to her first birthday and now she's in Kindergarten.
Best of Wishes!

thats very much possible :)

No, when your brain dies. everything stops unless machines do the brain job ( Breathing, heart, etc. ) So, the smile and the hands could be electrical impuleses of the body. Maybe medically and physically he couldn't hear or react, but that's all technicalities as far as I'm concerned. I believe the soul is infinite and lives on to go to heaven or whatever afterlife you believe in. I think your grandfather knew it was his time to go and that he was already in that peaceful transition of going to the other side. I think his spirit was the one that caused his physical body to smile and his hand to squeeze to show you and your family that he loved you all, and that he was happy and going to a better place. No matter what the doctors tell you is "possible" miracles and unexplained events happen all the time, and if you know in your heart that it was your grandfather that was giving those messages, rather than a medical fluke, then that's all you need to know! :) Keep the faith in spite of what others tell you, there will always be someone who doesn't believe.

No, Jennifer.
If your Grand-Father is declared "Brain Dead" and in a coma, medically speaking there is no chance that he even knew what was happening around him. Sorry, Sweetie.

,may be the person may not. what he smiled be due to the reflex action.
